Lakewood, Ohio defensive back Michael Dowell is hearing from the Irish.

Michael Dowell is an intriguing, versatile defensive back who the Notre Dame staff have had on their radar recently. I caught up with him yesterday to hear what he had to say about his contact with staff.

First, Dowell told me about his older brothers who play for one of Notre Dame’s rivals.

“My twin brothers play at Michigan state,” stated Michael Dowell of Lakewood St. Edward. “My brother David plays safety and Andrew plays linebacker. They’re my role models and mentors and everything. They’re good to look up to.”

Dowell explained that he has had conversations with a current Notre Dame player who graduated from his current school, Lakewood.

“An alumni from my school, Shaun Crawford plays there right now and he’s told me how much he likes it and what it’s like at Notre Dame,” said Dowell.

I then asked Dowell about his contact with the Irish staff and what they had to say to him regarding his recruitment.

“The recruiting coordinator, the defensive coordinator and the head coach all follow me on Twitter,” said Dowell. “I’ve been talking to the defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator and they told me to come and visit, check out the campus,” he added.

Dowell expressed that he certainly wants to visit South Bend. “Yeah, I don’t know when I’m going to visit yet. I’m going to try to get there hopefully soon,” he said.

A few other strong programs have also been in contact with the big hitting defensive back. “The schools that are recruiting me hard that haven’t offered me yet are Penn State and Stanford,” explained Dowell.

“I don’t have any visits lined up for the future but hopefully, I can go to Michigan State on Saturday for the spring game and watch my brothers compete,” mentioned Dowell.

“At times, I can see myself anywhere in the defensive backfield, whether it’s corner, safety or nickel. I can see myself at the nickel spot. I play there on third down for my high school team and I’m going to play there again on third downs for my high school team this year,” answered Dowell.Anywhere in the defensive

“Anywhere in the defensive backfield, I can be comfortable. Anything they want me to play, I’ll play it,” expressed Dowell.

“We were the 2014 and 2015 state champions, back to back. Our coaches, Pete Pappas and our great head coach Tom Lombardo really prepare us well in the off-season. We practice really hard and we have a really good tradition and coaching staff and we hope to win another state championship,” said Dowell.

Michael Dowell feels that his high school has very similar ways and traditions that Notre Dame has. He feels that he would fit in well there.

“Most definitely. Notre Dame is founded by the same tradition that my school is founded by and that’s the holy cross,” said Dowell. “That transition as far as how people carry themselves on campus would be very easy. The rules and expectations would be parallel.”

“I run track in the spring and I play basketball in the winter. My basketball team just got back from the final 4. Unfortunately, we lost but we had a good run. In track, I run the 400,” he stated.

“I grew up watching my brothers play football and eventually my dad made me get out there,” said Dowell. “My dad always pushed us and he was the one who made all of our dreams come true. He is the dream writer behind my brothers and I reality.”

Michael Dowell has an impressive film. He shows great speed, a nose for the football and has a strong understanding of the game. Lakewood is an excellent program from a highly competitive division that produces a lot of division 1 talent, like the Dowell brother and Shaun Crawford.
