Recruiting: Penn State Commit Isaiah Humphries Talks Notre Dame Offer
Notre Dame expanded their safety board by offering Isaiah Humphries.
Isaiah Humphries comes from a strong Texas program, Sachse, which churns out Division 1 talent on a yearly basis. He committed to Penn State back on December 31, 2016, over offers from Arkansas, Baylor, Oklahoma, Oregon, Utah and several others.
Humphries had a strong junior season in Texas Division 6A action with 53 total tackles and 5 interceptions. He also had a strong showing in the 7-on-7 circuit and won a Pylon championship.
Humphries proves to be a strong student as he holds offers from academically strong programs in Cal, Duke, Vanderbilt, Northwestern and now Notre Dame. Per his twitter, he boasts a very high 1360 SAT score, always a good sign for Notre Dame’s admissions.
I caught up with Humphries following the Irish offer today to get his thoughts on his recruitment. His father played football at Penn State for Joe Paterno, so I asked him if that had a hand in his decision to commit to the Nittany Lions.
“My dad didn’t have any influence on my committing to Penn State, honestly. I made the decision on my own, he didn’t pressure me at all,” answered Humphries. ” I went up there and visited and it’s a nice school.”
The 6’0, 191-pound safety then spoke about how he was born not too far from Notre Dame campus and has family in the area.
“I was born in Indianapolis. I have family in Chicago and California and New York and D.C., so I’m all over the place. I don’t really have a set place I need to be. That allows me to spread out and move around the country,” explained Humphries.

I asked Humphries to share his thoughts on his Notre Dame offer. “I’m excited about the offer. It kind of surprised me a little bit,” he explained. “I went and took a visit last spring, watched them play the spring game and I watched them play against Texas as well, here.”
As it turned out, there is quite a bit of history behind Humphries recruitment with Notre Dame.
“I was talking to coach Lyght, he wanted me to come up there last year. I thought I was going to get the offer then, but I didn’t and he said he wanted to see me develop as a player. He said they were evaluating me, but after time went by, I thought they had lost interest,” said Humphries.
After not receiving the offer earlier in his recruitment, Humphries thought Notre Dame was no longer interested.
“I wasn’t paying that much attention. I started balling out at camps a little more and my film is really good, so today, he asked me to call him, so I called him. He offered me. They have a new defensive coordinator and he likes my stuff too.”
Humphries father played for Penn State from ’88 – ’92 before playing in the NFL and CFL. During this time, he crossed paths with Notre Dame defensive back coach Todd Lyght, who Humphries spoke to me about.
“He’s a cool dude. Him and my dad know each other from football. They played against each other. I’m not sure if it was from college or pro but they know each other. He (Lyght) was a successful football player. He played many years in the league and everything. He’s a good dude,” Humphries stated.
I asked Humphries if he is planning another visit to Notre Dame.
“I just have to decide, you know. It’s not too far from Chicago. That’s where we drove from last time. I’ve already been there once, but things are different after you get an offer. I might check it out. I just have to talk to my family and see how it goes. I’m always up there,” said Humphries.

Considering Isaiah Humphries spends time in Chicago as well as his connection with Todd Lyght, I wouldn’t be surprised if he stopped by Notre Dame again before National Signing Day.
Stay tuned.
