Georgia defensive back Justin Birdsong will be visiting Notre Dame for the annual spring football game. He’s hoping for an offer.

Justin Birdsong is a versatile, talented and intelligent defensive back who shows excellent tackling skills in his junior season Hudl highlight (seen below) for Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Stephenson plays in the talent-rich Class 6A peach state division.

Birdsong accumulated an impressive stat line in his junior year, racking up 81 tackles, 8 pass breakups, 2 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles. His strong play left a lasting impression across the nation and landed him an invite to The Opening Regional in Charlotte on May 7.

He has received 7 offers and is hearing from several schools including Stanford and Notre Dame.

I spoke with Birdsong, who will be visiting Notre Dame for the Blue and Gold game on April 22, to get his thoughts on his upcoming Midwest visit. The talented tackler has been disappointed with how some of his recent visits have gone and hopes his trip to South Bend will be successful.

“I’m looking for the culture and for them to show a lot of interest in me,” stated Birdsong. “I’ve been on visits to a couple of other schools where they wanted me to come on the visit really bad but once I got there, they didn’t talk to me as much,” Birdsong explained.

“So, I didn’t like that and they dropped on my list of schools that I want to offer. As long as they show interest in me and show that they want me and hopefully offer, then that would be great,” added Birdsong.

Birdsong has been hearing from Todd Lyght recently and spoke to me about what they’ve discussed. “Coach Lyght, he called me on Tuesday while I was down in Florida, just to check up and stay up-to-date and make sure that I’m still coming to the spring game,” Birdsong explained.

“I told him that I would definitely be there. I haven’t talked to him a lot since he talked about the offer but he basically said that he wants to see me in person before he offers. I think they’re going to offer. They’re looking at if I’m a true 5’11 and everyone says I’m 5’11 including my doctor,” added Birdsong.

I asked Birdsong what an offer from Notre Dame would mean to him. “An offer would be big. They would definitely shoot to the top of my list. I’ve already been thinking about if I do get the offer if I would commit,” Birdsong replied.

“I probably would but first I would look at who they’ve offered, what corners are going to be committing and stuff and just talk to the coaches a little bit more and talk to the rest of the staff and just see how Notre Dame treats me,” said Birdsong.

Birdsong mentioned that he has been in contact with his fellow class of 2018 Georgia defensive back, Derrik Allen, who is currently committed to Notre Dame.

“Me and him both ran summer track a couple of years ago and I used to compete against him a lot,” explained Birdsong. “It’s fun seeing that he’s committed to Notre Dame and that he was a really good friend. Me and him still communicate,” added Birdsong.

“He has a lot of good things to say about Notre Dame. I’m going to tell him that I’m going to be up there for the spring game and see if he’s going to be up there with me, which I most likely think that he is,” Birdsong explained.

“I’ll continue to talk to him about Notre Dame and what he loves about it,” Birdsong added. “I think that he’s an amazing football player. I know his background in track and I know that he’s a real competitive football player. If him and I played on the same defense, that would be a really good defense,” explained Birdsong.

Justin Birdsong is one of the several talented recruits from the state of Georgia who Notre Dame has been recruiting recently. He plays mainly safety for his high school defense which is likely decided by his coaches as a result of his strong sun support traits.

The Irish need to add at least two more cornerbacks in this class and Birdsong is certainly a candidate to get an offer. After speaking with him, it sounds like if he gets the offer, he will very likely commit to play for the Irish in 2018.
