The Notre Dame football team scrapped by the Naval Academy with a 24-17 win. Despite only possessing the ball for 17:18 minutes and eight total possessions (included the last possession where Notre Dame took a knee), the Irish were able to put up 24 points. Notre Dame scored on four of their eight possessions.

Notre Dame Still Very Hungover

The Fighting Irish still looked sluggish against an inferior opponent on Saturday afternoon. During the last ten Quarters of play, the Notre Dame defense has played poorly. In fact, in the last 10 quarters, the Irish has allowed 85 points or an average of approximately 34 points per game allowed.

The Fighting Irish must sober up before next week’s game against the No. 20 Stanford Cardinal.

Wimbush Streaky

Brandon Wimbush struggled mightily early on. However, he made up for that poor performance beginning at the end of the first half and continuing into the second half.

Wimbush completed 9 of 18 passes for 164 yards with 3 total touchdowns. His 50% completion percentage might not look impressive. However, his receivers dropped several passes which would have made his overall completion percentage look better.

His 30-yard pass to Kevin Stepherson might have been his best throw of the day.

It is clear that Wimbush has the talent to be effective. However, he is tremendously inconsistent. He can make all the throws and knows where to go with the football. Kelly and Quarterbacks Coach Tommy Rees need to improve Wimbush’s mechanics if they want to see a more consistent player.

Turnover Dependent

Last week, the Hurricanes busted out the turnover chain several times. Although the Fighting Irish are not as obnoxious as Miami (FL), they have forced a lot of turnovers themselves. However, the Irish failed to force a turnover last week.

This week, Troy Pride’s interception helped stop a Midshipmen drive. Although it did not seal a victory, the turnover stopped the momentum and swung it in favor of the Irish.
