Notre Dame Quarterback Ian Book Among Early Heisman Favorites
By J.P. Scott
The early Heisman odds are trickling in, and Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book is getting some love.
Back in January, Oddshark released its first Heisman Trophy odds for the 2019 season. Notre Dame quarterback Ian Book was noticeably absent from that list.
Earlier this week, BetOnline.ag released its Heisman Odds. This time, Ian Book was near the top of the list.
Book had the fifth-best odds to win the trophy at 16/1.
Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence led the was as a 7/2 favorite, followed by Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa at 5/1.
Jalen Hurts — having recently transferred to Oklahoma — was third with 13/2 odds.
Six players have 12/1 odds, and then you get to Book, who is tied with quarterbacks Sam Ehlinger and Justin Herbert of Texas and Oregon respectively.
Six quarterbacks — including Book — with College Football Playoff experience were listed as favorites.
Additionally, only six quarterbacks have better odds than Book, who finished ninth in the nation in completion percentage in 2018.
Last year, Brandon Wimbush had the 19th best odds on early Heisman lists heading into the 2018 season.
For what it’s worth, 2018 Heisman Trophy winner Kyler Murray started the season with 22/1 odds to win the award.
During the 2019 Notre Dame football campaign, Book will have a couple of opportunities to compete with other players listed as favorites in the most recent Heisman odds. Notre Dame will face Jake From (12/1) and D’Andre Swift (12/1) of Georgia, JT Daniels (25/1) of USC, Shea Patterson (28/1) of Michigan and KJ Costello (28/1) of Stanford
Notre Dame has not had a Heisman Trophy winner since 1987, when wide receiver Tim Brown brought the award home.
