Notre Dame football ranked No. 2 in first CFP rankings
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame football team is one of the best in the country this season, and they were ranked No. 2 in the initial CFP rankings.
On Tuesday, the first College Football Playoff rankings were announced, and the Notre Dame football team came in at No. 2 overall. The only team ranked above the Irish were the Alabama Crimson Tide, and Clemson and Ohio State rounded out the top-4.
For those who do not know, the top four teams in the CFP rankings at the end of the season are the ones who get to play for a national title. The Irish, who already have a win in hand against the Clemson Tigers, can punch their ticket to the CFP by closing out the regular season with three straight wins, including one on Friday against North Carolina.
The Tar Heels are the only ranked team left on the Irish’s schedule before a highly-anticipated, and likely rematch against Clemson in the ACC title game.
Notre Dame rightfully earned No. 2 spot
Notre Dame has run the table through their first eight games, including that stunning overtime victory against the Tigers. Due to COVID-19, the Irish joined the ACC for the 2020 college football season, and they have proven to be one of the more dominant teams in the country.
Starting quarterback Ian Book is playing at an extremely high level, and has pushed himself into the conversation of a possible Heisman Trophy. Running back Kyren Williams is one of the best in the country, and the defense has stepped up big time this season, and is closing out games.
Being ranked in the initial rankings is a great accomplishment for this team, but there is so much left to do before they punch their ticket to the actual dance. Book has the experience, and skill set to lead this team to a win against any team in the country, but they will have to be dominant before the ACC title game if they want to remain in the expert’s top-4.
