Notre Dame ranked within top-100 overall in the FanSided250 Rankings
By Brad Weiss
Notre Dame fans are some of the best in the world, and the school was recently ranked inside FanSided’s top-250 fandom list, landing within the top-100.
When it comes to college football, there is no program as famous, or as illustrious as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Over the course of their history, the Irish have become synonymous with winning, producing legendary players, and becoming one of the more iconic schools and brands across the globe.
Recently, FanSided put together a list of the 250-greatest fandoms in the world, ranking everything from pop culture, sports teams, television shows, and personalities. Of course, Notre Dame made the list, ranked almost exactly in the middle of anything you could consider popular.
Where does Notre Dame rank
Out of everything in the world, Notre Dame came in at No. 90 overall in the latest FanSided250. In the college division specifically, they came in at No. 9 overall, falling behind the likes of Penn State, Oregon, and the Clemson Tigers, who were ranked No. 1 in the college division, and No. 14 overall.
Here are the criteria of the FanSided250 rankings.
"How do you evaluate fandom? You can try to quantify it. On each fandom’s FanSided 250 card, you’ll see three key statistics: the Fan Vote, Search Score, and Social Follows. But numbers alone can’t measure fandom, and so our editorial team dove deep into the presence and identity of each of the nominated fandoms. Each year, we continue to make tweaks to the methodology to make our system more accurate. This year, we’ve adjusted our values as well, placing a greater emphasis on buzz — how hot a fandom was in 2020 — than ever before. Our team took into account our longstanding values of magnitude (a fanbase’s size and scope), legacy (longevity and loyalty of the fanbase) and passion, but buzz was most important. If the fans of a player, team or entertainer have buzz, we see them all over social media, they are inescapable, they dominate every physical and virtual water cooler conversation. After much deliberation and healthy debate, 250 fanbases were ranked and ordered to be the list you see on the FanSided 250 today."
Ian Book has led this Irish team to a No. 2 ranking in the College Football Playoff, and has them within a distance of a possible national title. They had to play in the ACC this season due to the pandemic, but have run through the regular season with a perfect record, and now have their eyes set on a rematch with Clemson in the ACC title game.
As stated in the rankings, the Notre Dame victory over the Clemson Tigers was the most-watched college football game this season, which is a testament to this great fan base.
Congratulations to the entire team at FanSided for putting this together
