Jack Coan transferring to Notre Dame

Well, news broke Monday night to help Irish fans feel better about the quarterback situation heading into next season. Former Wisconsin quarterback Jack Coan announced on Twitter that he will be transferring to Notre Dame.

Coan was a three-star prospect in Wisconsin’s 2017 recruiting class, and while that may not be impressive, consider two things: Book was also a three-star recruit, and the Wisconsin football team has a reputation for identifying underrated recruits.

Coan’s last start came during the 2019 season. That year, he started all 14 games for the Badgers, which included the Big Ten Championship and the Rose Bowl. Coan completed 70.1 percent of his passes during that season for a total of 2,541 passing yards and 17 passing touchdowns.

Before the start of the 2020 season, Coan suffered a foot injury that kept him sidelined for two months and effectively ended his season. In his absence, Wisconsin turned to redshirt freshman Graham Mertz. I am not sure how much Mertz’s performance affected Coan’s decision, but it likely played a role.

As things currently stand at Notre Dame, I think Coan has become the slight favorite to win the starting job this offseason.
