Even though the Notre Dame football program has been to two College Football Playoffs in the last three seasons, questions remain as to just how good they are. In CFPs or New Years Six games, the Irish have fallen flat, and many point to a gap in elite talent between them and the likes of Clemson, Ohio State, and Alabama.

Well, that gap could be closing sooner than later, as the Irish continue to put together top-10 recruiting classes, and are on the brink of adding a tremendous haul in both 2022 and 2023. The addition of Marcus Freeman has proven huge on the recruiting trail, and in 2023, he just may land the best inside linebacker prospect in the recruiting class.

Tre Edwards is a dominant linebacker out of Mater Dei Catholic High School, and when it comes to his 12 offers, only one is considered a dream school.

Notre Dame football a dream school for Edwards

Standing 6-foot-1, and weighing 220 pounds, Edwards already has the size you look for in an inside linebacker at the collegiate level. After racking up over 100 tackles as a freshman in 2019, Edwards has not been able to play his sophomore year due to COVID but recently told Irish Sports Daily that he has been working out multiple times a day to stay ready.

When discussing his offers, he was quick to point out Notre Dame football is a dream school, and one his father is a big fan of. That could be a tipping point for Edwards, as well as academics, which he listed first in terms of what he is looking for in a school

"“Location doesn’t matter to me,” Edwards stated. “I’m looking at the academics, environment and the coaching staff.”"

Due to the fact he is from California, and USC was the first to offer him, the fact that location does not matter is huge too.

In terms of what Edwards is looking for, and what the Irish need to bridge the talent gap, this is a perfect match. Edwards also told ISD that he played against Tyler Buchner in high school, the elite quarterback brought in with the 2021 recruiting class and stated he is an absolute dog.

Notre Dame football has so much to offer a student-athlete, and in Edwards, they would be getting the kind of talent that the program dreamed they would when they brought in Freeman as defensive coordinator. This is a guy who is an elite recruiter, and one of the best minds in terms of the linebacker spot in all of football, so getting these two together would yield the best results possible for the program, and the student-athlete.
