Notre Dame Football could be set at QB for the long haul
By Brad Weiss
Over the past three seasons, the Notre Dame football program has had the luxury of having a consistent star at quarterback in the person of Ian Book. Not only did Book lead the program to two College Football Playoff appearances, but he also left school as the winningest quarterback in history, a huge accomplishment in its own right.
Now, as the Notre Dame football program moves on without him, one of the bigger questions heading into the 2021 campaign is who will be under center Week 1 against Florida State. The odds are it will be Jack Coan, a graduate transfer from Wisconsin, who has had success at the collegiate level.
If Coan does start, it will only be for the 2021 season, and you can be sure Tyler Buchner is going to get at least some time under center as a true freshman. If Buchner takes over for Coan in 2022, he will only be either a sophomore or a redshirt freshman, giving the Irish solid youth at the position moving forward.
Notre Dame football building solid quarterback room
On Thursday, the Irish were able to pick up one of their four offers from the 2022 class at quarterback, as Bergen Catholic (NJ) star Steve Angeli committed to the Notre Dame football program. Angeli is a guy who could challenge Buchner for the starting job in 2022, but even if Buchner is the guy for the Irish, having Angeli waiting in the wings only makes this quarterback room that much better.
Overall, you have to be happy with the state of the position group, a position where there were plenty of questions in terms of who would replace Book during the 2020 regular season. The program has answered that in a big way by bringing in Buchner, and with Angeli now in the fold, they could be set up at the position well into 2025.
As is the case at any level, the quarterback spot is the most important on a football team, and likely is the most important position in all spots. For the Notre Dame football team, they have a nice succession plan now, and there is still room to add a few more guys in the 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes.
