The Notre Dame Football program may have some question marks up and down their roster, but the running back spot is not one of them.

As the Notre Dame Football program begins preparations for the upcoming season, kicking off their spring practices last weekend, there are questions to be answered. The Irish are coming off another ten-win season in 2020, but they have lost a lot of talent to graduation and the 2021 NFL Draft, so they are a major question mark in terms of their ranking for next season.

While they have lost talent, a bunch of talent is returning, including one of the best running backs in all of college football last season. This player dominated the college football landscape, including Clemson, and will be the main cog in the Irish’s offense once again in 2021.

Recently, Brad Shepard from Bleacher Report put out his list of the top-10 returning sophomores in college football for the 2021 season. At No. 7 was a familiar face in running back Kyren Williams, a player who dominated in his first role as the feature back with the Notre Dame Football program, and someone who will be counted on in a big way again in 2021.

The reigning ACC Rookie of the Year, Williams rushed for over five yards per carry last season and will be relied on in a big way with Ian Book leaving.

Notre Dame Football star TE named Honorable Mention

Though he did not make the top-10, standout tight end Michael Mayer was listed as an Honorable Mention player in this ranking. Mayer exploded onto the scene as a true freshman this past season, and like Williams, will be a real security blanket for new quarterback Jack Coan this Fall.

Mayer finished his season with 450 yards on 42 receptions with two touchdowns.

Notre Dame Football has gotten better at wide receiver, a spot that was an issue at times last season, and they have enough talent to revamp the offensive line, even after losing so much talent. In Kyren Williams, they have a player they know they can rely on in the run game, and as a redshirt sophomore, this could end up being his final season in South Bend.
