So where does that leave Tyler Buchner?

Tyler Buchner, in his own right, is interesting in this case. He was the presumed number two quarterback by just about everyone, and as of now, he’s decidedly not. There is probably one glaring reason for this, he didn’t play his senior year of high school due to the COVID-19 pandemic in the state of California.

Buchner is in the process of shaking off a lot of rust while learning a new playbook, and catching up to Division I speed. That’s a lot to handle all at once, and luckily for him, and this Notre Dame football program, he enrolled early. He’s just going to take time to become a legitimate D1 quarterback.

Ultimately, it’s incredibly difficult to project depth charts during spring practice. It’s also safe to assume that Coan, because of his experience and proven talent, still has the inside track to earn the starting job come the opener at Florida State. Remember, this is a guy who led the Wisconsin Badgers to a Big Ten title game the last time he was a full-time starter.

However, it’s clear that there is a push for the job. It’s just not coming from Buchner, yet, like everyone expected. It’s coming from the often forgotten Drew Pyne.
