The Notre Dame Football program continues to bolster their 2022 recruiting class, this time landing defensive end Darren Agu out of Georgia.

Notre Dame Football has landed 2022 defensive end out of Georgia in Darren Agu. Agu was born in Ireland before growing up in England early in life, and once he started getting into sports over in the states, it was only a matter of time his frame and athletic ability would take over.

The Irish staff offered at the beginning of April, and the second he received that offer, it was going to be extremely hard to pass up for him and his family. Agu is very serious about academics first and foremost, and Notre Dame is everything he would want in that aspect.

There was no reason to wait any longer, and Agu officially pulled the trigger, joining the Irish class publicly on Friday afternoon. The football side of Notre Dame just made it even more sweeter for Agu. At the time of his commitment, Darren Agu held 31 offers from the likes of Alabama, Penn State, Auburn, and many more big-time programs.

What will Darren Agu bring to the Notre Dame Football program?

The 6’6 230-pound defensive end will bring size and relentlessness on the defensive line. Agu plays a lot of tight end in high school, but once he gets to college, he will absolutely be on the defensive edge where most are projecting him to end up. He brings a great burst off the edge and uses his hands exceptionally well for being such a raw and inexperienced football player.

His hands are very quick, but also aggressive, and he uses them to his advantage. Playing on the offensive side of the ball I think helps those qualities. It also helps his change of direction ability which is big for someone coming off the edge at his pace.

He has a great motor but not an over-the-top one where he loses control and containment.

Also, the frame is all there for Agu, and he will no doubt add some weight and mass to that. Once strength coach Matt Balis makes that happen he could be a special player off the edge for the Irish. One thing is for sure, he hasn’t played a lot of football but where he is already, both physically and fundamentally, is really something to see and Agu will only continue growing as he gains more and more experience at defensive end.

With the Agu commitment, the 2022 class now has 12 pledges, six on offense and now six on defense. In the defensive line room, Darren Agu will be joining Tyson Ford and Aiden Gobaira upfront, and it’s crazy to think that defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman and defensive line coach Mike Elston aren’t anywhere near done with that group. That trio in itself is extremely talented and it’s hard to believe it will no doubt be getting even better when the time comes. Stay tuned Irish nation.
