Notre Dame Football: Irish shown love in Sporting News ranking
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame Football team was shown some serious love by the Sporting News when they released their 2021 ranking this week.
Last season, the Notre Dame Football team ran through their ACC schedule, winning every game, including a victory over the Clemson Tigers. In 2021, they return to their Independent schedule with a slate that is going to have its fair share of tough games, but there is enough talent on this Irish roster to dominate once again.
Nine players were selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, so Brian Kelly has his work cut out for him, but the roster is stacked with talent, and there is a ton of talent coming in next year. Overall, the program is in good shape and is rightfully considered a top-10 team heading into the Fall.
Notre Dame Football ranked No. 6 overall
This week, Bill Bender of the Sporting News posted his top-25 teams for the 2021 college football season. While the usual suspects were at the top, with Alabama being ranked No. 1 overall, and Clemson following at No. 2, there was a real question as to where the Irish would land.
Some rankings have them barely in the top-15, while others have them in the top-10, which is where Bender put them. In fact, Bender ranked Notre Dame Football as the No. 6 team in his rankings, even taking into consideration how many changes are coming this fall.
Recently, Yardbarker also ranked the top teams heading into next season, and like the Sporting News, Notre Dame was in the top-10. Despite all the losses, there is a lot to like about this Notre Dame Football team, especially on defense, where there is veteran leadership on all three levels.
The offense should be fine as well, with Jack Coan likely taking over for Ian Book at quarterback, and Kyren Williams returning as the feature back. Sure, the Irish have to revamp the offensive line, but there is a ton of talent to replace the four men who are entering the NFL this season, and Michael Mayer is one of the best tight ends in the country.
