Notre Dame football: Recruiting could be changing for the Fighting Irish

Looking Ahead

Vernon represents the exact type of elite talent that Notre Dame football needs to land and develop to compete head to head with the College Football Playoff regulars. In the past five seasons, according to 247’s composite rankings, Notre Dame has had one five-star recruit, Michael Mayer.

Players like Jordan Johnson and Kyle Hamilton were ranked as five stars by some services, but not on composite. Though, it’s worth noting that Hamilton was absolutely a five-star talent. If you prefer ESPN’s rankings, Notre Dame has 10 top-300 recruits for 2022, so far.

To put it simply, this is a major leap forward for Notre Dame recruiting, and they still have several spots to play with in their 2022 class. As it stands now, there’s a chance that this becomes the best Notre Dame recruiting class ever.

This is big news for Notre Dame football fans and the program as a whole because it truly is the last step to winning these postseason games and joining the elite of college football again. If Kelly and company can string a couple more of these classes together, then Notre Dame will have the depth to match those couple of teams who are actually winning national championships in the modern era.

This class is momentum to build on going forward. It’s a sign of the great leap forward. It’s a chance to harness the full potential of the program, and it should be celebrated.
