Notre Dame football: Jack Coan’s 1st drive ends with 1st TD pass (video)
Jack Coan led the Notre Dame football team to a touchdown on his first drive as the starting quarterback, hitting Michael Mayer on fourth down.
Jack Coan has officially thrown his first touchdown pass with Notre Dame football, and it took his first drive to accomplish that. At 12:49 in the first quarter, Coan went to Michael Mayer for a 41-yard touchdown reception to take the lead 7-0.
It came on the first drive of the game for the Irish, and it was already Mayer’s third catch of the game.
The pass came on a 4th and 1, as Mayer lined up to the strong side and ran a flag route. He was never covered and could have walked into the endzone. This is as good a start as Jack Coan could have had with Notre Dame, while it looks like this offense is going to go right through Mayer this season.
Keep this up, and the Irish should blow out Florida State.
Notre Dame football is off to a fast start against Florida State
The opening drive was huge for the Irish, who watched some of their top competition on their schedule lose in Week 1. The goal was to start fast and put the lesser Florida State team away, and the offense has to have a ton of confidence after seeing the way Coan commanded the offense.
He looked nothing like a ‘game-manager,’ as the Irish did not run the ball at all on the first drive.
Hopefully, this is the start of a great season at Notre Dame for Coan. If he can keep up this level of play, Notre Dame should be able to contend for a New Year’s Six Bowl. This touchdown also means that Jack Coan is only 36 touchdowns away from tying the single-season record at Notre Dame, which is held by Brady Quinn, who threw 37 touchdowns in 2006.
Ian Book‘s 34 in 2019 are currently the second for a single season at Notre Dame.
