Notre Dame football at Virginia Tech: 3 Surprises in Week 6

Longest winning streak against unranked opponents

Shockingly, the Notre Dame football program became the new leader for the longest winning streak against unranked opponents. This turn of events occurred as the Irish finished off their comeback against the Hokies and, about an hour later, Texas A&M upset top-ranked Alabama.

The Crimson Tide won 100 games over opponents ranked outside of the top-25. This streak dated back to Nick Saban’s first year in Tuscaloosa. Notre Dame’s streak of 36 victories is now the country’s longest. It dates back to a loss to the same Virginia Tech squad in 2016.

Of course, it was a loss against a ranked team that threw this Notre Dame football season into shambles, but there is still a lot of football left to play. Notre Dame can continue to stack wins against unranked teams the rest of the way, as not one team they play during their remaining schedule has a number next to their name.
