Notre Dame football: Reasons Irish will benefit from Brian Kelly’s departure

Notre Dame athletic department received a wake-up call

Brian Kelly has stated that part of his reasoning for taking the LSU job is that he believes the LSU football program has some of the best resources in college football and that the athletic department in Baton Rouge is in alignment with the mission of the football program.

By making that statement, Kelly is implying that the Notre Dame football program is not afforded comparable resources and that Jack Swarbrick was not aligned with Kelly’s vision. Listening to some of the beat writers who have greater insight into the Notre Dame football program, I am led to believe there is truth behind this.

It seems like there may have been some recurring friction between Kelly and the athletic department regarding overall investment in team facilities, staff size and salaries, and accommodations. If this is true, then Kelly putting voice to those issues has sent a bit of a wake-up call to Swarbrick and the rest of the athletic department.

It has been made clear to Notre Dame that they can become more competitive in those areas. I think we will see a greater investment in the football program moving forward. If they do so, they might not have to see another head football coach willingly leave the university.
