Notre Dame football: Jack Coan a perfect QB to break Irish big-game slide
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame football program has not won a big-time bowl game since Lou Holtz was the head coach, but that should change on Saturday night.
The Notre Dame football team will take on the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the Playstation Fiesta Bowl, a New Years Six bowl game. Both teams narrowingly missed out on the College Football Playoff this season, and for both, this will be an opportunity to put a capper on what has been tremendous 2021 seasons.
For the Notre Dame football program, this is another opportunity to shed their reputation for not being able to come up big on the biggest stages. Last season, after a perfect regular season, they were run out of the building by Clemson in the ACC title game, before being blasted in the College Football Playoff by Alabama.
In fact, the Irish have not won a big-time bowl game since Lou Holtz was the head coach, a drought that has gone on for far too long. However, this season could be different, and starting quarterback Jack Coan is the perfect signal-caller to help the Irish break this current slide.
Notre Dame football in good hands with Jack Coan
Coan is the kind of quarterback who can lead this team to victory over the Oklahoma State Cowboys, as he is effective with the football, and rarely makes mistakes. He also is not the kind of player who plays with an ego, needing to take the big shot every time, and has done an amazing job handing the ball off to Tyler Buchner at times this season.
His unselfish play, and leadership skills, have made him a presence in this locker room, and his experience could be the difference in this one. He has played in big games before and based on how he has played since the team revamped the offensive line, there are very few quarterbacks in the country playing as well, and as focused as he is right now.
The Irish have the talent on both sides of the ball to bring home the victory in the Fiesta Bowl, which would be a tip of the cap for Marcus Freeman in his first game as the program’s head coach.
