The Notre Dame football team is battling it out against Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl, and quarterback Jack Coan is having a magical afternoon.

The Fiesta Bowl is one of college football’s historic bowl games, and the Notre Dame football team is trying to break their big-time bowl game drought in this year’s classic. As such, legends have played in it, from Vinny Testaverde to Blake Bortles. There have been massive offensive performances, and now Notre Dame’s Jack Coan is on pace to shatter the Fiesta Bowl’s passing records.

That’s right. Jack Coan. Who would’ve thought it? Not me. Not us.

At the half, Coan is 24/33 for 342 yards and 4 TDs. He also has -2 rushing yards.

The Fiesta Bowl record for attempts and completions are both held by Colt McCoy, who was 41/59 in the 2009 game against Ohio State. Browning Nagle, a Louisville quarterback, holds the record for total yards at 431, and passing yards at 451. He did that against Alabama in 1991. Then, Peter Tom Willis threw 5 touchdowns in 1990 against Nebraska.

That is still the record today.

Notre Dame football dominating through the air

Given how one-dimensional Notre Dame has been all game, you’d have to expect Coan to keep attacking Oklahoma State through the air. As long as he can stay effective, all of those records are well within reach.

A couple of Notre Dame records are within reach too. Brady Quinn’s six touchdown passes in 2005 against BYU, and Joe Theismann’s 526 yards against USC in 1970 are both on the chopping block too.

Seriously, Jack Coan could have the greatest passing day in Notre Dame history, which would be a capper to a season that saw him come in and become a leader for this program. Throughout all the ups and downs, Coan has put together a storied Notre Dame career in only one season.
