The Notre Dame football team will see Braden Lenzy and Avery Davis come back for the 2022 season, and they will lead a young WR group.

This past week, the Notre Dame football program got word that speedy wide receiver Braden Lenzy would be returning for another year on campus. That was huge news considering the program lost out on two of their key wide receiver recruits in C.J. Williams and Amorion Walker, who decided to sign with USC and Michigan, respectively.

With Kevin Austin Jr. declaring his intentions of going pro, that meant that the program would need to lean on Lenzy in a big way, but Lenzy got some big-time help this weekend. Fellow veteran Avery Davis, an absolute playmaker in his own right, will also be coming back to South Bend, taking advantage of the COVID rules put into place last year.

Davis was a captain for the Irish last season and will assume an even bigger role in the offense in 2022. In 2021, his season was cut short due to a torn ACL against Navy.

Now, the Irish have two legitimate leaders atop their depth chart at the wide receiver position, as well as a true sophomore in Lorenzo Styles Jr. who could be one of the best wideouts in the country this upcoming season.

Notre Dame football will be a CFP contender next season

The truth is, this Irish offense is going to be special, as there is serious depth at running back, and the offensive line got bolstered with Jarrett Patterson announcing he will return for another go-around in 2022. Also, Notre Dame football has the best tight end in the country in Michael Mayer, who will go into next season as the front-runner for the John Mackey Award.

The biggest wild card will be this wide receiver group, but Davis returning is big for not only leadership but depth. Remember, Deion Colzie and Jayden Thomas were both true freshmen last season as well, and incoming true freshman Tobias Merriweather has a skill set that could make him a breakout star in Year 1.

Overall, the Irish have gotten back a ton of players who would have been 2022 NFL Draft picks, which is a testament to these guys wanting to play for Coach Freeman. The Irish get out of the gate fast in 2022, as they go to Columbus to take on Ohio State, and it is looking more and more like the roster is going to be one of the best in the country.
