The Notre Dame football team has an elite player in tight end Michael Mayer, who is poised for a record-breaking season in 2022.

During the 2021 college football season, Notre Dame football saw tight end Michael Mayer set a few program records for his position group. His seven touchdowns passed Cole Kmet for the most in a single season by a tight end in Irish history, while he also passed Tyler Eifert for the most receiving yards for a tight end as well.

In 2022, Mayer goes into the season as not only one of the best tight ends in the country but also a potential first-round draft pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. With changes up and down the roster on the offensive side of the ball, Mayer is going to be key for the Irish this upcoming season, and he should set some records along the way once again.

As of now, Mayer is in reach of some pretty significant records for tight ends in South Bend.

Notre Dame football star could be the best TE ever in program history

Mayer has already accomplished a ton through his Notre Dame football career, and now, he sets his sights on being the best to ever do it at his position. In fact, Mayer needs only 607 yards this season to pass Tony Hunter for the most receiving yards by a tight end in school history, as well as 27 catches away from passing Eifert for most receptions by a tight end in a career.

However, his exploits do not stop there.

If Mayer can get to 70 catches this season, a reasonable number considering how thin the Irish are at wide receiver, and how much Tyler Buchner should key on him this season, he would move into No. 2 all-time in program history in receptions. That would leave him only behind Michael Floyd, whose record of 271 catches could last forever.

There are a lot of question marks for this Irish offense in 2022, but Mayer is not one of them. He was robbed of the John Mackey Award this past season, and in what will likely be his final season in South Bend, expect him to re-write the Notre Dame record book, becoming the best tight end in program history.
