Notre Dame football: Kyren Williams plummets in latest 7-round NFL Mock Draft
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame football team expects to see star safety Kyle Hamilton go in the first round in 2022, but another talent is plummeting.
Looking at the 2022 draft class for the Notre Dame football team, there are not many names that will be called across the three-day event. In fact, the Irish could see as few as three players taken this year, mostly because a bunch of talent decided to return for another season in South Bend.
Throughout the draft process, it was seen that star running back Kyren Williams would be one of the first backs off the board. He posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at Notre Dame, and in doing so, projected to be one of the first three running backs selected, possibly even in Day 2.
However, he had a slower 40-yard dash time during the NFL Combine, and despite everything he put on tape for the Irish, he has seen his draft stock plummet. In fact, one recent mock draft has him falling to late in Day 3.
Notre Dame football star falls to the sixth round
In the latest mock draft at Pro Football Network, Cam Mellor has Irish star Kyle Hamilton going No. 4 overall to the New York Jets, and then the program goes silent. The Irish do not come back up until pick No. 210 overall, where the New England Patriots select Williams.
This is a tough fall for Williams, and an even tougher team to be picked by, as they have tremendous depth at the running back position. Truthfully, if he goes to New England, you likely won’t see Williams make an impact at the NFL level for quite some time.
One notable talent that was left out of this mock is Kevin Austin Jr., who is having a tremendous draft season and is likely just an oversight by the writer. Some predict he could go as high as Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft, this after shining during the NFL Combine and his Pro Day.
Rounding out the draft in the seventh round are Myron Tagovailoa-Amosa and Jack Coan, who are picked within four selections of each other. Tagovailoa-Amosa is picked at No. 228 overall by the Green Bay Packers, and Coan winds up in Buffalo as a possible backup to Josh Allen to start his NFL career.
Both are solid landing spots for these two players.
