The Notre Dame football program could see their starting quarterback drafted in back-to-back drafts, as Jack Coan is trending in the right direction.

During the 2021 NFL Draft, Notre Dame football star Ian Book was slated to be a late-Day 3 selection. Book, who won more games at quarterback than any other player in program history, was seen by some as too small or did not have the skill set to succeed at the next level.

Well, the media was wrong, as Book would go on to be selected early on Day 3, and ended up starting a game for the injury-plagued New Orleans Saints as a rookie. Book proved during his rookie season that he certainly is capable of playing at the NFL level and that he was crucial to the New Orleans quarterback room.

In 2022, the Irish could see their latest quarterback selected as well, with Jack Coan having a terrific draft season, fresh off a standout campaign in South Bend. A one-year starter for the Irish, Coan had some magical moments last season and has stood out within the draft process.

Looking around the NFL, the talent at the quarterback position may be as bad as it has been in quite some time. Sure, there are still the elite names out there, and we have seen younger quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Mac Jones step up in recent years, but in terms of depth, nearly every team is lacking.

Every offseason we see the same names get bounced around from team to team, and that is not always a good thing. For teams with a proven starter, and not much else after that, Coan would be a perfect selection to bolster the quarterback room on Day 3.

So while some Notre Dame football stars are falling in recent mock drafts, as has been the case for Kyren Williams, Coan continues to move forward. There are so many teams with weak quarterback rooms outside of their starter, and in Coan, they would be getting a veteran talent ready to come in, learn the system, and possibly contribute as a rookie.

You cannot say that about many of the quarterbacks in this draft class.
