The Notre Dame football team opens up their 2022 season against Ohio State, presenting them with a golden opportunity in Week 1.

In Week 1 of the college football season, there will be a marquee matchup between the 2022 Notre Dame football team, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. Both teams have enjoyed outstanding success as of late, and they both go into the matchup as potential College Football Playoff contenders.

Of course, we really will not know who will emerge victorious in this matchup, but we do know that a Notre Dame victory would go a long way towards them being considered legitimate title contenders. The Irish have been either in the CFP, or on the doorstep of the CFP for the last few seasons, but have never really been considered a challenger to win it all.

After plenty of potential 2022 NFL Draft picks returned to school, and an elite recruiting class came in, the 2022 team should be a special one. They do have a lot of decisions to make before this September clash, including who the starting quarterback will be, but for the most part, this is a playoff-ready squad.

Notre Dame football playing Ohio State is a golden opportunity

The narrative surrounding this Notre Dame football program is that they cannot win the big game, and they have rightfully earned that moniker. However, the Week 1 matchup against Ohio State can go a long way in erasing those feelings, as a new head coach is at the helm, and they are playing against one of the elites in college football.

For Marcus Freeman, he gets the chance to beat his alma mater in Ohio State, a team where he starred at linebacker. For the Irish players, this is a chance to put to bed the notion that they cannot win big games, give them the confidence, and resume they need to make a legitimate CFP push.

Notre Dame football is one of the most prestigious in the sport, and there are some heavy expectations for Freeman as he takes over for Brian Kelly. He has built up his staff, has the talent he needs to win, and against Ohio State, maybe the Irish finally erase their reputation in a game that will highlight the opening weekend.
