The Notre Dame football team has to still decide who their starting quarterback will be in 2022, but could a true freshman once again step up?

The Notre Dame football team started Jack Coan at quarterback in 2021, and he did a tremendous job coming in as a graduate transfer. The former Wisconsin Badger took a few weeks to get his feet wet once the season started, mostly due to ineffective play up front along the offensive line, but in the end, he had an outstanding season for the Irish.

Now, for the third time in three seasons, the Irish will have a new face starting at quarterback in Week 1, as someone must follow Ian Book and Coan in that regard. It appears there will be a two-man race between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne, but after the Blue-Gold Game, Pyne did not do much to solidify himself as a potential starter.

We saw what Buchner could do last season, as he stepped in as a true freshman and had some big moments for this Notre Dame football team. He could certainly win the starting job in 2022, but could another true freshman come in and provide a spark like he did last season?

Notre Dame football team must take a long look at Steve Angeli

Staying with the Blue-Gold Game, one player who certainly stood out was Steve Angeli, a true freshman quarterback from Bergen Catholic (NJ) High School. Angeli was a four-star recruit coming out of BC, and in the spring game, showed his ability to get the job done with his arm, and his legs.

Much like Buchner did last season.

He already appears to have a good grasp of Tommy Rees’ offense and played with incredible guts in his first appearance in front of the Irish faithful. He is a guy who can provide a spark, so why not have some plays designed for him in 2022.

In 2023, things could change in a big way, as the Irish are all-in on Dante Moore, arguably the best quarterback in the 2023 recruiting class. For now, all three of these quarterbacks should be getting a long look as the Irish get ready for the Ohio State Buckeyes in Week 1, and I would not count out any of them, including Angeli, just yet.
