Notre Dame football: QB remains the biggest question mark for the Irish
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame football team should be one of the best in the country this season, but questions still remain in terms of the quarterback position.
Going into the 2022 college football season, there is a lot to like about this Notre Dame football team. They have first-round talent on both sides of the ball, and at some position groups, they boast arguably the best player in the country.
That cannot be said when it comes to the quarterback spot, as the program is looking to find its newest starting signal-caller. The 2022 season will mark the third straight year that someone different will be the team’s starting quarterback in Week 1, but that is not due to a lack of talent.
In fact, both Ian Book and Jack Coan are on NFL rosters right now.
In 2022, the battle will rage on between Tyler Buchner and Drew Pyne, two players who saw significant time during the 2021 campaign. The Blue-Gold Game was supposed to be a showcase for both players, but Buchner did not play, and Pyne struggled.
It looks like this competition is going to go on all summer.
Notre Dame football looking for QB1
There is also a third face in the mix for playing time at the quarterback spot, and that is true freshman Steve Angeli, who was a star during the Blue-Gold Game. If he continues to progress, Tommy Rees has to take a hard look at him as well, so the quarterback position is priority No. 1 for this coaching staff to figure out this spring and summer.
For head coach Marcus Freeman and his staff, the task is simple, and that is to find who the QB1 will be for Ohio State across the next few months. That is going to be a make-or-break game for the 2022 Notre Dame football team, so the preparation will have to take place knowing which quarterback will be under center on the first possession of the season for the Irish offense.
Right now, that is anybody’s guess.
