Notre Dame football 2022 Fall camp position preview: Running Back

Possible Week 1 Depth Chart

Week 1 of the 2022 schedule for the Irish is a tough one, as they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes, and will likely only have three healthy running backs on the roster. McCullough is going to have to find a way to get the most production out of this group without running any single one of them into the ground.

Possible Week 1 Depth Chart vs Ohio State

  1. Chris Tyree
  2. Audric Estime
  3. Gi’Bran Payne

As you can see, the numbers are real small for the position group, which makes Tyree and Estime staying healthy huge for the Irish early on. Diggs is going to be back at some point, we just do not know when right now, so I would expect a heavy dose of Tyree and Estime against what should be a very tough Ohio State defense.

If the Irish hope to get to a College Football Playoff appearance this season they will need Diggs to come back sooner than later. Tyree and Estime are solid players, and Payne is a very interesting running back, but with a new quarterback under center in 2022, leaning on the running back room will prove huge for the team’s offensive success.
