The Notre Dame football team appears to have dodged a bullet in losing Al Golden to Syracuse who is looking in a surprising direction.

Al Golden isn’t going to Syracuse. At least that’s true if we’re to believe a new report about where the Syracuse Orange are looking for their new head coach.

There’s been a little nervousness in South Bend since Syracuse fired Dino Babers. After all, Golden has gone one of the best defenses in the country.

He’s also been a head coach before. He didn’t exactly shoot down talk about him looking to take another head coaching job when he had the opportunity to do so either.

According to Football Scoop, the Orange are focusing in on their man. It’s a bit of a surprising name actually. According to John Brice, Holy Cross head coach Bob Chesney is thought to be their top target.

"“Just finishing his sixth year atop the Holy Cross program, Chesney has proved a steady program-builder across three head-coaching stints. Prior to taking over at Holy Cross in 2018, Chesney had turned the Assumption Greyhounds into perennial NCAA Football Division II Playoffs regulars, including a 2017 run to the quarterfinals. At Salve Regina in the New England Football Conference, Chesney guided the Seahawks to 23 wins in three seasons and a bowl victory. His deep ties throughout the Northeast are seen as a key along with his track record as a head coach, which includes a lifetime 111-46 mark.”"

Notre Dame football dodges at least one bullet

Based on that report, it looks as though the former ACC power is staring a full rebuild square in the face. That might be one reason why Golden is no longer considered a starter.

There are a couple of caveats here. The first is that nothing is official as far as Chesney. It’s possible the school could decide that they want someone who has more experience in Power 5 when all is said and done.

It’s also worth pointing out that other schools are still out there looking for a head coach.

The good news is that if Notre Dame football does lose their defensive coordinator, it’s possible they already have their Al Golden replacement on campus.
