While the transfer portal isn’t open until next week, three Notre Dame football players announced on Monday that they intend to move on to new schools.

When talking about the transfer portal, it’s a safe bet that most Notre Dame football fans are picturing the players the Fighting Irish can pick up this winter. Few are thinking about the impact players that might be on their way out.

As of Monday, there’s plenty of reason to think about those who are leaving the Golden Domers. That’s because three impact players all announced they’re going to be playing somewhere else than Notre Dame in 2024.

The first domino that fell was the one that hurt the least, though it was still a blow to the Fighting Irish defense. Defensive end Nana Osafo-Mensah announced he’ll be looking to play for another team.

It would seem as though the Fort Worth, Texas native is looking for somewhere he can start. While that wasn’t in South Bend, he was an impact player. The defensive lineman had 20 tackles and was second on the team in sacks with three.

A few hours later, the Notre Dame football took a couple of hits when wide receiver Chris Tyree and starting center Zeke Correll announced they were departing as well.

It seems unlikely playing time is the issue with Tyree, who was third on the team in catches in 2023 and led the Irish in receiving yards. Perhaps he’s looking for an offense that puts the ball in the air more, or feels as though he might not have the chance to get the same numbers in 2024.

Of the three, Correll’s announcement might have been the most surprising, considering he’s been a starter for the last two seasons.

He finished the regular season on the sidelines in concussion protocol, but that doesn’t seem like a key reason for the veteran offensive lineman to depart Notre Dame football.
