The coaching carousel might end up bringing a former Notre Dame football team back to the state of Indiana, this time as the Hoosiers’ head coach.

If you happen to be a Notre Dame football fan who is still more than a little sore about former offensive coordinator Tommy Rees leaving South Bend for the greener pastures of the Alabama Crimson Tide, you might want to take a breath before you read further.

It’s possible that Rees could be on his way back to Indiana. No, Marcus Freeman didn’t find a way to get him back to South Bend. If things shake out the way some analysts believe, he’ll be about 3.5 hours south.

According to Bruce Feldman of The Athletic, Rees is one of a number of people who is on the shortlist for the Indiana head coaching job. It appears that the Hoosiers are looking to move fast after the firing of Tom Allen. Because of that, Rees, or whoever they end up hiring could be installed before the start of December.

While the former Notre Dame football offensive coordinator is mentioned as being a target, he’s not alone. Among those joining him on the shortlist are South Alabama’s Kane Wommack, Ohio State OL coach Justin Frye and one heck of a wildcard name.

According to Feldman, former NFL head coach Jon Gruden could be ready to making his return the ranks. Could he really be ready to do it in Bloomington?

Ex-Notre Dame football coach could be in Bloomington soon

Rees is not only a former OC, but is also a beloved past quarterback for Notre Dame football. That made his departure to Alabama that much more painful. He seemed like someone who might hang around until the head coaching job could be his in South Bend.

That’s yet another reason why his getting the gig in Bloomington could frustrate more than a few Notre Dame football supporters.
