Chris Ash nearly set shameful Notre Dame football history in win over Purdue

This is something Marcus Freeman must be paying attention to.

It wasn't easy and there was nearly a two-hour lightning delay, but Notre Dame football was able to turn heads with its 56-30 win over Purdue on Saturday. However, what stands out quite a bit is that the Irish gave up 30 points, with that coming after giving up 41 vs. Texas A&M.

From early on in the game, people were voicing their displeasure with defensive coordinator Chris Ash, who continues to prove to be a questionable hire by head man Marcus Freeman. The 1-2 start has been rough and no one can argue that the defense isn't getting the job done.

Notre Dame is 'a school that I can definitely see myself at,' says top CB prospect

Ash should be thankful that the Irish didn't give up another score, as it would have had him looking even worse. Why? Per The Athletic's Pete Sampson, Ash and his defense have allowed the second-most points through three games in ND history. As you'll be able to see below, Ash indeed was close to making unwanted history. This further proves that things need to be cleaned up ASAP:

Marcus Freeman continues to back Chris Ash despite his rough Notre Dame start

After the game, you could tell that Freeman was a bit frustrated with the defensive performance, but he was also quick to say that it's a work in progress. He's going to remain patient and hope that Ash can figure things out. Freeman is also understanding that there's a lot of youth being featured on that side of the ball.

Offensively, CJ Carr was sharp, throwing for 223 yards and two touchdowns. His day was highlighted by the 66-yard score in the first half to Malachi Fields, which came on the first play on offense for the home side. It had people in South Bend fired up.

On the ground, Jeremiyah Love reminded everyone why he's one of the top running backs in the country, rushing for 157 yards and his two scores. It was a brilliant day at the office on offense, but the defense is leaving a lot to be desired.

Ash is struggling and Freeman previously said he could get more involved if things keep going south. Sooner rather than later, the time might come for Freeman to have more of a say in things, especially since the Irish must win out to hopefully reach the College Football Playoff.
