CJ Carr has led Notre Dame to a 3-2 record so far this season, but the two losses came against teams that are now ranked in the Top 5, and not to mention, those were the first two games of his college career as a starter. Carr has impressed so much since being named the starter for the Fighting Irish, which, of course, means the comparisons to other freshman quarterbacks are being made.
Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is in the same boat as Carr. He is a sophomore who is now in his first season as the starter for the Buckeyes. However, these two guys are on very different teams, and the argument could be made that Carr is really the better quarterback, and it is for a few reasons.
First things first, a comparison of the two quarterbacks' stats needs to be done, so below is a side-by-side comparison in the key categories for a quarterback:
Passing yards:
Carr: 1,280
Sayin: 1,313
Passing touchdowns:
Carr: 11
Sayin: 13
Interceptions:
Carr: 2
Sayin: 3
Completion percentage:
Carr: 67.7%
Sayin: 80.2%
Two of the best young QBs in the country are Notre Dame’s CJ Carr and Ohio State’s Julian Sayin.

Who does national CFB analyst @LandonTengwall think is the better QB right now? 🤔

CJ Carr is doing more with less at Notre Dame than Julian Sayin is doin at Ohio State
Look, Notre Dame is 3-2 on the season, and Ohio State is 5-0. Clearly, the Buckeyes are the better team, but look at the opponents. The Fighting Irish had to play two Top 25 teams in the first three weeks of the season, and the Buckeyes beat the Texas Longhorns, who are no longer ranked, in the first week of the season.
After the Longhorns, the Buckeyes have yet to face another opponent who has even sniffed the Top 25 rankings. The Fighting Irish played Boise State in Week 6, which was ranked in the Top 25 to start the season, and is the only non-power conference team they have faced so far this year.
The other key thing to look at is the weapons around the two quarterbacks. Carr's best weapon is running back Jeremiah Love, who is amazing, but his wide receiver core could be a little stronger, especially compared to the wide receivers Sayin is playing with.
Sayin is throwing to Jeremiah Smith, a wide receiver in the talk for winning the Heisman trophy, and Carnell Tate, who could easily be a first-round draft pick in the NFL. As it was said in the video above, there are many NFL teams that would maybe trade for the wide receiver room that Ohio State has right now.
For Carr to still be right there with Sayin when it comes to stats, but have less to work with on the team, is what makes Carr the better quarterback in a fair opinion. Let's not even get started on how the defense plays into it, as Ohio State and Notre Dame's defenses are even on the same level at this point.
Carr is doing a lot in his freshman year as a starter, and he makes it clearer and clearer why he was the right choice for Marcus Freeman and this Notre Dame offense.
