We don’t have a winner of Notre Dame football’s quarterback competition yet, but we do have a bit more insight into who wasn’t winning the job. On Thursday morning, just one day after the transfer portal opened, the Irish saw one of its quarterbacks decide to see if the grass is greener elsewhere.
The Golden Domers’ battle for the starting quarterback job was said to be coming down to Steve Angeli, CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey and after the team’s Blue and Gold game, head coach Marcus Freeman hinted that things might be thinning out a bit. In fact, he made it sound as though it would be down to two, before fall camp.
Steve Angeli made that official as he’s leaving the Notre Dame football team. While not exactly a shocking move considering he was considered the odd man out after the spring game, it’s still the kind of move that caused shockwaves in South Bend.
How does Notre Dame football’s QB room look after transfer?
Angeli has been a fixture at the school for the last few years and has been considered the heir apparent by some after first sitting behind Sam Hartman and then Riley Leonard. He started the 2023 Sun Bowl and led the Irish to a 40-8 win after Hartman sat out.
He also came into the playoff game against Penn State while starting quarterback Leonard was being evaluated for a possible concussion. Angeli played well enough (6-of-7 for 44 yards) that some believed he should have stayed in the game even if Leonard was ruled fit to return. Leonard did eventually come back and helped win that game.
With Angeli gone, the Notre Dame football quarterback fight comes down to Minchey and Carr with the redshirt freshman looking like the frontrunner now thanks to some throws downfield in the Blue and Gold game that had eyes popping out of their skull. As far as where Angeli goes, there just happens to be a new opening at Tennessee.
