When the Los Angeles Chargers drafted former Notre Dame offensive lineman Joe Alt, the team's fans weren't all that happy. They thought the team needed other players than an offensive lineman with such a high draft pick. After his 2025 season opener on Friday night, those fans are almost certainly changing their tune.

Alt played most of the 2024 season at the right tackle position but was moved to left tackle to start this year's campaign. While there was some talk that he might struggle a bit with the transition, Alt made it clear he had no problem at all. In fact, he ended with the best PFF grade of his entire career in one area and a tidal wave of plaudits in the wake of the Chargers' win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Former Notre Dame star Joe Alt earns elite PFF grade in Chargers’ Week 1 win

The former Notre Dame star logged an incredibly impressive 91.4 pass block rating. Interestingly enough, that grade for pass blocking from PFF was the highest since the last time he played left tackle for the Chargers.

Alt played that position in Los Angeles' final regular-season game of the 2024 season. He posted a pass blocking grade of 83.7, and when he moved back to the other side of the field in the Wild Card game, he posted a near career low rating.

It seems likely that Alt has found his new home at left tackle.

The former Notre Dame football star can now sit back on Sunday and watch the rest of the NFL take each other on as his Week 1 game is over. Joe Alt can also rest easy in knowing he had a fantastic opener in his sophomore season in the NFL.
