For about 24 hours, former Notre Dame quarterback Kenny Minchey was headed to the Big Ten. Now he's headed to the SEC. In the process of changing his mind, Minchey has shown just how insane the Transfer Portal is these days.
On Sunday, Minchey committed to the Nebraska Cornhuskers but didn't sign with his new team. He might have been holding out hope that someone would offer a bigger bag, and the Kentucky Wildcats apparently obliged. On Monday night, the former Fighting Irish QB2 committed and then signed with UK, ending any chance he might flip again.
In the process, the guy who almost won the Notre Dame starting quarterback job this fall will almost certainly be pointed to as everything that's wrong with the current era of college football. Indeed, he's a symptom. Still, after spending three years as the good soldier in South Bend, he finally decided to look out for himself, and it's hard to blame him.
Former Notre Dame QB Kenny Minchey creates chaos in the transfer portal
By doing what he did, some other quarterbacks may have Minchey to thank for getting their own bag. Nebraska needs a QB in the portal; that was obvious the minute Dylan Raiola decided to leave.
Despite the portal only being open since Friday and open until January 16, things are moving fast. The biggest names at quarterback are already finding their new homes. Some of the B-tier signal callers are getting their landing spots as well.
Those players still looking for a new team will seemingly all at least get talked to by Nebraska. The Huskers might end up "panic buying" someone and offering up a bigger "bag" than they did with the former Notre Dame quarterback.
Minchey underlined the craziness of this era of the sport. Notre Dame coaches have already learned that lesson a bit with some transfer portal losses of their own. It doesn't work to bemoan reality. Everyone has to adjust and live with it.
