Over the last year, the Notre Dame football team has found a new archenemy in Penn State Nittany Lions coach James Franklin.
This new coaching rivalry started when Franklin and Freeman held a joint press conference before the two teams matched up in the Orange Bowl during the college football playoffs. During that press conference, more than a few onlookers felt as though Franklin was being disrespectful towards Irish head coach Marcus Freeman while also complaining about how Notre Dame wasn't in a conference. The Blue and Gold got a measure of revenge by beating the Big Ten team to advance to the CFP Finals.
James Franklin renews Notre Dame jab at Big Ten Media Days

- Stresses need for uniformity
- Won’t criticize B1G teams for non-conference scheduling when other conferences play 8 league games
- Reiterates Notre Dame/any other independent should be in a conference pic.twitter.com/fPnrsZuLp5
During this week's Big Ten media days, Franklin went back to whining about Notre Dame during comments about seeding for the College Football playoffs . As usual, the comments came off as sour grapes over the success the Irish have had over the last few years.
Franklin first turned his ire towards the SEC for having their teams play just eight conference games while the Big Ten has their teams play nine conference games. However, his focus quickly turned to Notre Dame.
"Everybody should either play a conference championship game or everybody shouldn't play conference championship," Franklin said. "Everybody should be in a conference. I said that last year at a press conference before playing Notre Dame. Everybody thought I was slighting Notre Dame. I've been saying that for 10 years. If I didn't say it in that moment when I was asked the question, I'd be a hypocrite. Like, I'm going to say it now because I've been saying it the whole time."
It seems unlikely that the PSU head coach will shift his focus away from the Irish anytime soon. The Notre Dame football team logged yet another win against Franklin on Thursday afternoon when they scored the commitment of 4-star quarterback Teddy Jarrard, who was also considering the Big Ten team before he committed.
