Over the course of his short Notre Dame football career, Marcus Freeman has already seen some high highs and low lows. There’s wins over very good teams like the season opener against Texas A&M. There are losses like this year’s NIU or Marshall in his first season.
But one of the things that Freeman has done that seems to be under the radar, is that he continues to have one of the best coaching records of anyone who has come through South Bend, especially this early in his career.
Freeman attained another Notre Dame football coaching record on Saturday when he beat Navy 51-14. Or at least he tied a record.
Marcus Freeman sets another Notre Dame football record
Freeman is now sitting in a tie with Frank Leahy for the most ranked wins in the first three years on the job with 10. This is quite the impressive feat and there's still another ranked opponent on the Irish schedule as well.
It’s also quite impressive considering how many people repeat the lie every single year that the Irish never play a tough schedule.
The next step for Freeman and his Irish is to continue to play well in ranked matchups and take better care of business in the other games as well. What a wild journey for Freeman's first go-round as a head coach.
It is pretty amazing to think about the number of people who have advocated for Freeman’s firing early on, and should he beat Army he will stand alone as the coach with the most wins over ranked teams in his first three years of his career.
