As Marcus Freeman prepares to take the Notre Dame football team to the College Football Playoffs for a second straight year, he's also had to fend off all kinds of coaching carousel rumors. Now that the New York Giants are looking for a new head coach, the buzz around the Irish coach is growing by the day.
During a recent episode of the New York Post's Blue Rush podcast, Giants insider Paul Schwartz highlighted the organization's admiration for the 39-year-old defensive mind.
"You know, the Notre Dame coach," Schwartz noted, referencing a recent photo of Freeman. "I saw we had a picture of him. I know there is some high regard for him in the Giants building." According to other insiders, Freeman's aggressive, player-empowering style has drawn NFL eyes, with the Giants' staff particularly impressed by his rapid rise and innovative schemes.

An outside the box thought:
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman
Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman has been talked about for the New York Giants job since the opening came up
Other New York Giants analysts have also keyed in on the Notre Dame head coach. Alexander Wilson of Empire Sports Media said his favorite team could "gamble for greatness" by pursuing Marcus Freeman to replace Brian Daboll.
ESPN reporter Jordan Raanan recently listed the candidates he thought were the best fit for the Giants' job:
- Interim Mike Kafka
- Chargers DC Jesse Minter
- Ex-Giant Antonio Pierce
- Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo
And then he named an "outside the box" candidate for the job in Marcus Freeman.
So far, most of the talk about the Notre Dame coach has still been comments from people who think the club likes him. Or reporters who think he'd be an interesting candidate. No reports that they've reached out to interview Freeman just yet, but that could be coming in the next few weeks.
