Matt Leinart gives the worst take yet on the Notre Dame-USC rivalry breakup

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Matt Leinart is backing the USC Trojans. After all, he played for the program for five years, winning both the BCS Championship and the Heisman Trophy in 2004. However, the reasoning behind his most recent message of support for his alma mater against Notre Dame football is lackluster at best.

While defending the Trojans after USC and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish decided to end their long-lived rivalry series, Leinart brought up the fact that his team can claim more Heisman winners than any other program in the country.

In response to Leinart's message, one football fan summed up his illogical logic perfectly:

"The Dallas Cowboys have won 5 Super Bowls, but none since 1995, several years after Notre Dame won its last national championship. Do you trust every decision Jerry Jones makes, also? Is it possible that organizations change over time and not always for the better?" Fahad Saleh said.

Matt Leinart is way off the mark about the USC-Notre Dame breakup

The Cowboys have, (in)famously, been run into the ground by Jerry Jones, who has been the owner, president, and general manager of the franchise since 1989.

Just because Dallas can claim five Super Bowls doesn't mean that the Cowboys are doing all the right things at this very moment. The exact same logic can be applied to the Trojans, who haven't won a National Championship since 2004.

It was both the Trojans and the Fighting Irish who fell short of extending the rivalry series, not just Notre Dame, but also not just USC. There is truly no reason to blame one program over another (even though it looks like USC head coach Lincoln Riley is running scared of Marcus Freeman and the Irish).

There is a possibility the rivalry will resume in 2030, just like the Texas-Texas A&M rivalry resumed after a decade-long hiatus. The one thing Leinart did correctly point out is that this is a bummer for both fan bases, but it isn't the end of the world.
