Notre Dame living rent-free in Mario Cristobal's head even after CFP win

Even months after the regular-season game and following Miami's first-round win in the College Football Playoff, the Canes couldn't forget Notre Dame.

It has been nearly four months since the Miami Hurricanes eked out a three-point victory over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. It has been just a few hours since the Canes defeated the Texas A&M Aggies in the first round of the College Football Playoff.

Despite the 111-day separation since the Notre Dame-Miami game, even after the postseason win, the Irish were living rent-free in the Hurricanes' minds.

During the postgame press conference, Miami head coach Mario Cristobal apparently felt the need to bring up his team's head-to-head win over Notre Dame from the first week of the season, a feat that the Aggies pulled off just one week later.

Mario Cristobal can't keep Notre Dame out of his head

"Regardless of what the result was today, [the committee] made the right decision, Cristobal said following Miami's 10-3 win over Texas A&M. "Let us never devalue the meaning of head-to-head competition."

Keep in mind, the Fighting Irish were able to put up 40 points on the Aggies and 24 points on the Hurricanes, despite losing both matchups. Cristobal rubbing salt (his meager 10 points) in Notre Dame's wound (being left out of the CFP) was embarrassing at best.

Now, Cristobal and the Hurricanes are set to take on the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes, who also happen to be the defending National Champions, in the quarterfinal round of the College Football Playoff at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl.

After putting up just 10 points on a Texas A&M team that just lost to the Texas Longhorns, who finished the year 9-3 overall, the Canes are going to have to fix a lot of problems to even see the end zone on the horizon against Ohio State.

No. 2 Ohio State and No. 11 Miami are scheduled to kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Dec. 31, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN. Now, the Aggies can join the Fighting Irish in hate-watching the Hurricanes' postseason run.
