Notre Dame’s surprise midweek visitor could signal another major recruiting shake-up

One of the most interesting aspects of the work the Notre Dame football program has done on the recruiting front this year is just how hard they've worked to steal guys away from Penn State. Safety commit Matt Sieg, who is one of the only guys sticking with the Nittany Lions since James Franklin got fired, might not be sticking all that long.

Sieg took an official visit to Pitt last weekend, managing to get a look at what the Panthers have to offer while also seeing the Irish up close and personal dominate another opponent on the road to the CFP. Now Sieg is visiting South Bend in a rare midweek trip in the middle of the season.

Sieg's trip to Notre Dame follows Marcus Freeman and his crew ramping up pressure on the 4-star WPIAL prospect. They're also trying to pull running back Kemon Spell, who has dropped plenty of hints that the Irish are leading.

The most noteworthy part of Sieg's visit to South Bend on Tuesday is that it has materialized quickly. Sieg arrived in town on Sunday evening, fresh off his official visit to Pitt, and is expected to stay until Thursday.

Granted, the early signing period is just a few weeks off, so one way or another, a final decision from the 6-foot-185-pounder from McDonald (Pa.) Fort Cherry is coming.

Should Sieg pull the trigger on Notre Dame, it would be yet another player that Penn State wanted that the Irish have won the recruiting battle on. If it comes quickly, it would be on the heels of Khalil Taylor committing last week.
