Not only is Carson Towt making his NFL dreams come true, but the former Notre Dame basketball star is doing so with the perfect team. Towt, who has never played a down of competitive football since before high school, signed with the Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday afternoon.
Towt was able to sign with the Colts before the NFL Draft because he's not eligible, since he never played a down of college football. That gives him a leg up on other undrafted free agents that he'll be competing with in the spring. Towt is officially signing as a tight end, the perfect position with his size and build.
Towt joined the Notre Dame basketball program this season after four years with Northern Arizona. The 6-8, 250-pound forward has long been a solid rebounder, including averaging a career high 12.4 rebounds per game in the 2024-2025 season.
This past year, he saw limited action with Notre Dame but still managed to haul down 9 rebounds per game. After the Irish season was over, he made it clear he would pursue a professional career playing football, rather than basketball. He first secured official representation, and that was a smart move considering he's on the Colts just a few weeks later.
Indianapolis is the team willing to take a risk on the big man because this kind of thing has worked before. The Colts already have Mo Alie-Cox on the roster as a tight end. He played basketball for VCU before becoming an UDFA back in 2017. He's been with the team ever since.
While Towt's story is unusual and interesting all by itself, his signing with an NFL team also makes Notre Dame the subject of some truly interesting trivia. The Fighting Irish are now the unofficial leaders for schools that have alumni in the NFL who didn't play football at the school. Towt joins Dallas Cowboys kicker Brandon Aubrey, who only played soccer in South Bend.
