Notre Dame basketball secured a historic victory Saturday night over the Virginia Cavaliers, as the Irish defeated the Cavaliers, 74-59.

The Fighting Irish secured their first win over Virginia on the road, as they were previously 0-9 from John Paul Jones Arena. Notre Dame lived and died from the deep ball, as they shot 12-23 from three and was led by Markus Burton’s 21 points.

The Notre Dame basketball win not only etched their name in the history books but secured a much-needed win and a breath of fresh air. The win takes much needed pressure off Micah Shrewshberry and ends a dreadful streak.

Notre Dame basketball conquers kryptonite as Markus Burton on verge of Irish history

Entering Saturday night Notre Dame was winless on the road in ACC play since last February. Irish last road win came against Louisville Feb. 21 in their blowout victory 72-50. This victory over UVA is very similar as the Irish won by 15 points and at one point was even up 27.

The Irish snapped a seven game road winless streak in ACC play, as entering Saturday the Irish were winless on the road in ACC play this season. Blue and Gold kryptonite has been away games as last season the Irish were 2-8 on the road and this season, they are now 1-3.

The Irish have kept the games close this year, where they have lost on average by seven points on the road. Notre Dame got torched by Cooper Flagg a couple weeks ago where Flagg made history with 42 points which is now the ACC Freshman record.

Notre Dame star guard, Markus Burton, led the Irish to conquer their road droughts as he has been on a tear since he returned from his injury back in November. The Sophomore out of Indiana, averages near 20 points per game shooting 45% from the field and 37% from deep. Burton has scored 20 points or more in five of his last six games, (seven of his last eight if you don't count his three minutes vs Syracuse), including his 21 point performance in the Irish win over Virginia. Burton shot 7-14, including 4-6 from three-point line.

Burton scored the Irish first nine points in their historic win and led ND to a 14 point lead at half. Burton 21 point performance marks his fourth straight 20 point game, and sets him up to try and etch his name in the Notre Dame basketball history books.

If Burton is able to secure 20 points or more against Georgia Tech, he would be the first Irish men’s basketball player to score 20 or more in five consecutive games since Ben Hansbrough in 2011

This would be a huge stepping stone for this franchise and Markus Burton when you think of all the pure talent that played under Mike Brey and for this Irish programs since 2011. Notre Dame has had some franchise legends play for the program since 2011 that didn't achieve this accomplishment, including 10 players that played in the NBA since Ben Hansbrough streak, like 2021 NBA champion, Pat Connaughton.

Notre Dame has been to March Madness six times since 2011, including their historic 2015 run when they won their first Conference Championship and made it to the elite eight. Burton has a chance to put his name in an elite category in Notre Dame basketball history, a category that many greats didn't even achieve.

Markus Burton will seek history next game Tuesday, Jan. 30 against Georgia Tech in South Bend. Notre Dame basketball are now 3-5 in ACC play and are ranked 11 in the conference. Next five games are crucial for the Irish, as they take on Tech, Miami, FSU, VT and BC. Four of the five teams have a below .500 ACC record, and FSU currently is 4-4 in ACC.
