Micah Shrewsberry update hasn't slowed down Notre Dame exodus rumors

A key rumor was shut down, yet Notre Dame basketball still feels headed for a messy spring.

After rumors last week that Notre Dame basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry might be leaving to take the same job at Butler, there were questions about where that would put the program. However, on Tuesday night NDInsider writer Tom Noie reported that the rumors were false.

"Micah Shrewsberry is not a finalist for the Butler University coaching job. There is no dialogue with Butler, nothing behind the scenes with anyone from Butler," Noie wrote on Twitter. "Shrewsberry will return for his fourth year at Notre Dame. Maybe too a fifth, sixth and seventh."

If that report was meant to stop what is expected to be an exodus from the Notre Dame basketball team this Transfer Portal season, expectations were very misplaced. On Wednesday, the third member of the program announced his intention to transfer. When the portal opens on April 7, Ryder Frost will join Sir Mohammed and Garrett Sundra.

Micah Shrewsberry is staying, but Notre Dame basketball still faces a portal exodus

Mohammed and Sundra announced their intentions on Tuesday. In the same thread where Noie said Shrewsberry was staying put, he said the Fighting Irish will lose more players in the coming days. "Expect ND transfer portal exodus to continue. Key guys are being offered far more money to play elsewhere."

So far, "key" guys are sticking around. Neither Frost, Mohammed or Sundra got a ton of minutes this past season. Of course, all three might have seen their playing time increase next season after some seasoning.

While guys like Markus Burton haven't announced they're leaving yet, Noie added there is a chance that Notre Dame could be down to three returning players when the smoke clears. If that's true, one has to wonder whether keeping Shrewsberry around is really good news.

Under his leadership, Notre Dame has had three straight losing records. Known as a man who can rebuild a program, there hasn't been much in the way of building so far. Now it appears he's going to have to start his rebuild over.
