With the college basketball season just days away, it also marks the start of Hannah Hidalgo season. Arguably the nation’s best player is once again starting things off by bringing home honors for a Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball team expected to do big things in 2026-27.

Already named the Preseason ACC Player of the Year earlier this month, Hidalgo was named an AP preseason All-American on Thursday.

She led the ACC in scoring at 25.3 points per game and the nation in steals at 5.6 per game, while averaging 6.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists per contest. She is the only men’s or women’s college basketball player this century to average at least 25 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals per game. Her 202 steals set an NCAA single-season record. The sky’s the limit for what we might see from Hidalgo this year.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball regular season tips off next Sunday in Rome, Italy, for the Eternal City Tip Off against Villanova, alongside the men's team.

Around the sports world

  • Famed pro and college running back and current Southern Jaguars head coach Marshall Faulk announced earlier this week that he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease: “I literally asked my doctor because I noticed it as I was playing golf. I noticed the rigidity in my hand after I play a lot or practice a lot, I thought it was just normal nerves when putting and stuff like that. But it started to be times where I wasn't playing — I mean, where I was playing, but I wasn't in a match, and it would still do that.”
  • "I was like, 'Wow, is that something? Is that normal?' And the doctor was like, 'You need to go get checked.’”
  • Faulk said he caught it early, and the treatment options have allowed him to continue living life normally for now. Still, he felt it was important to shed light on the situation.
  • Heading into Thursday, James Madison looked like the G6 representative in the College Football Playoff. While the Dukes could still get there, an overtime loss to Appalachian State, 34-31, seriously dented their chances.
  • Meanwhile, Memphis improved their chances by improving to 6-2 with a 41-34 overtime win over East Carolina. With just one G6 getting in the playoff as usual, the race is certainly much more wide open now.

  • The Notre Dame volleyball team heads back on the road following a five-match homestand for a trip to Florida, taking on Miami on Friday, October 23 at 6:00 pm before heading to Tallahassee to face Florida State on Sunday, October 25 at 1:00 pm. Both matches will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
  • Miami might soon join the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team as an independent. If the Protect College Sports Act passes and includes restrictions on changing conferences, the Hurricanes have said they might consider becoming an independent rather than staying in the ACC.
