The 13th-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball team cruised to a 125-59 exhibition win over Truman State Monday night inside Purcell Pavilion in a preseason tuneup before heading to Rome later this week to open the regular season against Villanova.
The Irish were on fire from the field from tip to the final buzzer, making 52 shots on 61.9% shooting, including 12-of-23 from beyond the arc. The Irish scored 74 points in the paint and forced 27 Wildcat turnovers, which led to 46 points.
While Hannah Hidalgo and crew were expected to get a blowout win against a team that doesn’t play at the Division 1 level, it was a show of force from a team that hopes to prove it’s a national title contender.
With the regular season just days away, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball team is already playing like it’s in midseason form. That’s certainly a good sign.
Former Notre Dame Star Skylar Diggins returns home
Former Notre Dame women’s basketball All-American Skylar Diggins has been hired as an outside consultant and Special Advisor to Karen & Kevin Keyes Family Head Women's Basketball Coach Niele Ivey, the program announced Monday.
Diggins returns to Notre Dame after her 12th WNBA season, averaging 16.3 points and 5.3 assists throughout her career. A seven-time WNBA All-Star and five-time USA Basketball gold medalist, she most recently captured Olympic gold with Team USA at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Dante Moore shuts it down
After missing the past three games with a concussion, Oregon quarterback Dante Moore is not expected to return this season, coach Dan Lanning announced Monday.
"If it was up to Dante in any shape, way, he would be out there playing for the guys," Lanning said, adding that Moore has not yet been medically cleared. "This isn't a selfish decision on Dante's part, saying, 'I don't want to come back, the season doesn't look the way I want it to look.' That's not at all what this is.”
Moore was projected to be the No. 1 pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. How shutting it down affects his draft stock, and CJ Carr tangentially, will be interesting to watch.
Notre Dame’s receiver rotation needs work
During his Monday press conference, Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman admitted that the coaching staff knows the wide receiver rotation isn’t getting it done.
“I’ve been outspoken about it with the staff,” Freeman said Monday. “We have to find ways to get those guys in the game, but it’s also a challenge to them: How do you continue to be more consistent in practice so there’s no hesitation to put you in the game?”
Latest injury report is ominous for Miami
The latest injury report for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish isn’t a big deal against Navy, but if the same guys are hurt against Miami, it’s a problem. with DJ McKinney out, Brauntae Johnson still sidelined, and Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa among the questionable players, Chris Ash needs that list to shrink considerably before Miami arrives.
