The Notre Dame Fighting Irish women's basketball team is expected to make a big run in 2024-25 and Sonia Citron will be a big reason why.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish women’s basketball team is expected to be one of the squads that could bring home some national championship hardware during this 12-month period. While the football team has an outside chance, Hannah Hidalgo and company are widely expected to be a Final Four contender.

If they do indeed find a way to go on a real run this winter, Hidalgo will certainly be at the center of things. The talented guard was one of the best freshmen in the country a year ago. She’s expected to be even better in her sophomore season. But she can’t do it all alone.

One of the members of the team who could be a kind of Scottie Pippen to Miles’ Michael Jordan is Sonia Citron. It’s not just me saying that either. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball guard was named on a watch list for the best at her position.

When it comes to naming the most exciting players on this team, Hidalgo and Olivia Miles are often talked about, but it’s worth pointing out that Citron has made both All-ACC and All-ACC Tournament in two consecutive seasons. She was ACC Rookie of the Year two seasons before Hidalgo arrived.

Now, there’s a possibility she could be honored in a different way this season. The Ann Meyers Drysdale Award is presented annually to the best female shooting guard in the country. Citron is one of 20 to make this year’s watch list.

Citron joins Florida State’s Ta'Niya Latson, Louisville’s Jayda Curry, and NC State’s Saniya Rivers as ACC players on the list.

Also among the 20 is defending winner JuJu Watkins of USC, If Watkins impresses as she did as a freshman, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish guard will have her work cut out for her to win the award.
