The Notre Dame football team is officially on the lookout for a new defensive coordinator. After three years in South Bend working with Marcus Freeman, Al Golden is one his way back out.
Instead of coaching the defense for the Irish next season, he’ll be the defensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals. What was thought to be a rumor is now official. At least it is according to Pete Thamel.
Thamel claims that Golden has told Notre Dame football officials that he’s accepted the job. Putting an end to a courtship that ran its course quickly.

There was some talk that Golden and the Bengals were matching up right after the NFL team fired former defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo. However, he made it clear that he wasn’t going to discuss a new job while the Irish were getting ready for the National Championship game.
It's a solid move for Golden, who coached linebackers for the Bengals in 2020 and 2021. He left for the Irish when he was offered a chance to run the defense for one of the most historically important football programs in the history of the sport.
While it technically wasn't missions accomplished with the Blue and Gold, he put together one of the most impressive units in college football.
With veteran departures that include Benjamin Morrison, Xavier Watts and Howard Cross III, it's likely the idea of rebuilding wasn't as attractive as making the jump to the pros.
Now, Marcus Freeman will really put his stamp on the Notre Dame football team with whoever he hires in place of Al Golden.
