Brian Kelly is planning on returning to South Bend and Notre Dame, which sounds like one of those ideas someone needs to work on talking him out of early and often. Nevertheless, the former Irish and LSU coach sounds bound and determined to come back to a place where plenty of people would not exactly welcome him with open arms.
Brian Kelly is planning to visit Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame football to learn
Kelly talked about visiting the Irish as he attempted to resurrect his career on the Sports Seriously Podcast, co-hosted by USA Today's John Brice last week. If there's a positive of this visit, it's that the fired LSU coach understands things need to change. He wants to work with the guys he worked with before and learn from them. Or so he says.
"I honestly want to go and spend a little time with guys that coached with me," Kelly said. "I want to get to some NFL camps. I'm going to go back up to Notre Dame and see Marcus. I want to see those guys, and Mike Denbrock was in my wedding."
It's funny that Kelly has to point out that people like Denbrock actually like him. He seems to know what his reputation around the sport is these days. Even if he rarely tries to change it.
Marcus Freeman turned Notre Dame football into a program Brian Kelly now wants to learn from
"Reconnecting with the guys that I know, and I want to go see how they’re doing and how they’re doing it. What are the things I can pick up from that?"
It stands to reason that when Kelly does return to South Bend, it will be under the radar. Notre Dame fans have never been happy with the way he left and the timing of the whole situation. It doesn't help that he's had less than glowing things to say about the Fighting Irish program since he left.
The fact of the matter is that Notre Dame fans should actually be plenty happy he left. Without his departure, Marcus Freeman wouldn't be the head coach, and the Golden Domers wouldn't be on the cusp of their first national title since 1988. For that, Brian Kelly can get some pointers from the current staff. Just not too many.
